ClacksNet is a registered Scottish Charity (No: SC030537), it was founded to promote local community use of the Internet, and to provide assistance for community groups to get on-line and have a web presence. The idea was first conceived early in 1999, and a steering group was formed with the first meeting in May of that year. During the first meetings, the idea was discussed by members of Jim Marshall and Gillian Law of Hawkhill Community Association, Norman Shackleton of the Clackmannanshire Volunteer Development Agency, Duncan Dennett of The Citizen's Advice Bureau, Kim Ayres who was later to form e-scope, Margaret Stewart of LALIC and Des Gallagher of Clackmannanshire Council's Adult Education Services. The Management Committee has since been through several changes, and many local community groups now have a basic web presence. The adoption of the name 'ClacksWeb' by Clackmannanshire Council sometime after our project began has since caused a certain amount of confusion in some quarters, but it was believed that because of the work we had already done, it was probably better to keep our own name and hope that eventually most people would begin to realise the difference. With additional help from Rosemary Murphy of the CTDU, a constitution was drawn up and the inaugural meeting was held on the 19th September 2000, where it was officially adopted.
